Earlier this year the team down at GatesmanMarmion+Dave spoke with me about a project they wanted to produce. A series of pieces illustrating the importance of hand washing. The idea was to photograph hands in very specific shapes and positions which would then be composited to look like landscapes.

A short while later the project got the green light and we proceeded about building an image library of the hands. The lighting needed to be a fine balance between moody contrast and flat which would give the retouching team at 4 Amoeba the greatest amount of push and pull when building out the finished composites. We attained this look with a single medium softbox to the direct side and slightly overhead of the hands which were on a white seamless table top set up.

Below are a few of the finished executions which I can say we are all very happy with and proud of.

Jill & Russ: Hybrid E Session

Going out for the day to photograph and film Jill and Russ was a real pleasure. The couple met while tailgating at a Steelers game all the way out in Phoenix. Russ proposed to Jill on the Grandview Overlook and so we reenacted this for the video part of the shoot.

Katie & Jeremy: Hybrid Engagement Session

Two weekends ago we traveled up to Bradford, Pa to produce a hybrid engagement session for Katie & Jeremy. Travis Neely Photography will be photographing their wedding at Holiday Valley in Ellicottville, Ny in December of this year. We’re really excited about it as it will be our first snow wedding in the 6 years that we’ve been shooting. Below you will find some samples from their shoot along with our video. Lindsay & Bryan: Pre Wedding Hybrid Shoot

On Saturday I took a leisurely stroll through downtown Pittsburgh with Lindsay & Bryan to scout locations for their upcoming Summer wedding. The wonderful couple will be having their ceremony at a church in the North Hills of Pittsburgh with the reception taking place at the famous Priory on the North Side. Downtown Pittsburgh offers some really great locations for wedding and engagement photography. The mix of old world and super modern architecture, the urban alleyways, and the open space of Market square all add a variety of possible backdrops with the Cultural District introducing a touch of high class. Along the way we produced some photos and video to get them used to being in front of our cameras and generally just got to know each other better.

I’m really excited to be photographing their Pittsburgh wedding this summer… below is a little video clip we put together along with a few photo samples from the day. Introducing “Hybrid Engagement Sessions” Stills/Cinema

This past week allowed us the opportunity to hang out with Megan & Bob for the day for their engagement session. It was a great day for shooting (the skies cooperated) and we had some fun. On this day I shot entirely available light and also did some filming to make this our first Hybrid Engagement Session.

A Blimp Heralds Spring in Pittsburgh

Today is not the first day of Spring… in fact we are a few weeks into Spring. The weather over the last few weeks has been hit or miss and has included 73 degree days followed by snow flurries the next morning and even multiple storms containing large hail. On this day however it is 65 degrees, sunny, and it is opening day for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Opening day has for the last 7 years of me being a resident had a special meaning… the true start of Spring… and the signal… the Goodyear Blimp!

Here in Pittsburgh we only have a limited part of the year to enjoy being outside in the sun and warmth and I really think the residents take full advantage of it.

Mount Washington Gets a Makeover

Grandview Avenue atop Mt. Washington in Pittsburgh, Pa is known for it’s world class views of the city, it’s high end restaurants, and… a big abandoned eyesore of a building. The “Edge” restaurant, which sits at One Grandview, was at one time a swanky venue overlooking the city. It must in it’s heyday have been a place to brag about taking your date or clients. Today, 32 years after it’s abandonment, there is nothing more to brag about. The dilapidated building has become a favorite hangout of homeless and junkies, “graffiti” artists (and I use that term loosely), and sits precariously on a cliff side hanging over a densely populated area.

To the delight of the neighborhood it was announced last year that a development company had purchased the land and would be building a 30 story building/plaza in it’s place. After what seems like a very long wait over the Winter demolition began a few weeks ago.

Today I took a walk over as the last of the building was coming down. I’ve watched people photograph the process all week and knew that there would be an overabundance of photos of the same scene. I chose to photograph it differently by utilizing what is called a tilt/shift lens. A tilt/shift lens is just what it sounds like… a lens that you can tilt and shift while it is on the camera body. Designed to be able to straighten lines in architectural photography it has the added side effect of producing an odd focus plane. Below you will see what I mean by this. A Realization…

Over the last 6 years I’ve photographed countless couples on their wedding days. One common feeling that I’ve had each time is how strikingly in love these people were. To be completely honest and open, as I always am, it left me with a strange emotion… a curiosity of something I couldn’t quite comprehend. Some might say that feeling was jealousy, but how can one be jealous of something they can’t even understand?

In any case, I was the quintessential happily single and free 30 year old guy living my dream career… and then something happened. I met someone. A blonde haired, freckled, and spectacled beauty to be more accurate. Being that I wasn’t even looking (and neither was she) or even interested in dating at the time this was quite a surprise. I’ve since only been able to describe it as finding something good that you didn’t know you needed or were even missing. Though I have said the words in my younger and less knowledgeable days I now know that for the first time in my life I am, without a single shred of doubt, in love with someone.

I look back at all the fantastic couples I’ve worked with over the years and for the first time can relate to that sparkle I saw in them.

Pittsburgh Commercial Photographer

In addition to shooting weddings I am also a commercial photographer. In January I was asked to shoot an ad for This Is Red Agency. It was my first time working with them and I had a really good experience. When producing a photo shoot for an agency there are several people involved… one of which is what is called the Art Director or Creative Director. Having a good art director on a shoot is key. They know what the finished result needs to be for their layout etc. The folks involved with this shoot were very very good and knew exactly the lighting and posing that was necessary to fit their ad. I was asked to provide several different lighting scenarios ranging from “overcast” to “high noon” to “dusk”. Utilizing my experience with light shaping and the tools at my disposal I was able to provide the clients with exactly what they needed.
